Cheers George

Thanks to the murderous cull in government spending meted out in the name of austerity by UK chancellor (he manages economic affairs for us all here in the UK) George Gideon Osborne.

It's hard swallow when Osborne is clearly such a slimy fellow. Whilst people everywhere perhaps sense a moral vacuum whenever Nick Clegg speaks (he's the leader of a junior partner party in the present UK, coalition "government"), everybody likely thinks George could possibly wriggle out of any uncomfortable situation due to his party's lack of love for the common people.

Well it turns out now that because nobody's got any money - not normal people, anyway - people are abandoning their pets AND ceasing to adopt abandoned pets because they can't afford to keep them.

So, George Osborne, the pets of Britain thank you from their gas chamber.

Hi Charles, UK has been fighting the FTT Financial Transaction Tax for years, and some in the Euro are going to have it. USA had it from 1914-1981 so it does raise revenues, and since ordinary folks already pay higher fees, which are just a corporate word for corporate taxes,we will survive. The UK would rather tax ordinary folks because many of them don't know the MP's phone number or name, unlike the well heeled who have assistants that retain such useless information.
One should remember that worldwide there is $700 trillion in derivatives, here in the USA it is around $270 trillion, so even a little teeny tiny ftt would raise big bucks, but then again the wealthy have hidden over $30 trillion from their governments so as not to be taxed. Odd isn't it, plenty of untaxed income but no money for taxes:))

Gonzo - You obviously weren't around after the war or you'd know what real austerity meant. We had nowt and food was rationed. We never bought stuff unless we could afford to pay for it and that included pets. Folks today don't know they're born. No matter how poor they still buy their booze fags and lottery tickets to say nothing of all the latest hi-tec gadgets. I've got more sympathy with their love deprived kids than dogs. Sorry if this offends but really. Lets get things in perspective here. You want poverty? Go to Africa mate, see what real poverty is.
