This was just emailed to me by an eminent colleague. It's an article by Prof Stefano Harney about the dangers of allowing the demise of subjects in the university curriculum that don't carry a direct, discernible money value.
I saw the prof speak at my own university a short while ago and his ideas impressed me. This whole view needs discussion, much more than stories of upset students getting out of hand. What we need is more of a big picture discussion about the future of our society, its universities and where we need to really resist the oppressive practices of this illegitimate, ConDem government.
I certainly think that running around with placards isn't going solve this new funding crime. This isn't really about pay, jobs, or fees and I think if we truly isolate and understand what it is about, we are likely to have an uprising on the scale of the poll tax demonstrations of the early 1990s.
Of all the groups in society, a government takes great risks in pissing off the most intelligent, aware and unplugged groups in its society. We are armed with the facts about ourselves, them and what is right and we are the best equipped to get our point across.
