These "social" roles, which most of us we spend our lives conforming to, for reasons we often do not question, or understand, effectively control us as much as we allow them to.
The problem is that we invariably find ourselves being constantly and irretrievably occupied, with the "business' of the day. This is often related to us pursuing our lifelong goal of becoming little more than what "society" and its social institutions say we should be.
This idealised, public self has been constructed to keep us very busy in accordance with the objectives of the state and it ruling classes.
We buy into this view as children, subconsciously and we accept training provided to become "it". Don't just "see" the vision, but "be" the vision.
Thus we do school, the main objective of which is to cause us to conform socially, regardless of what else we do.
How's your conforming coming on. Go on, convince me you're a free-thinking individual, why don't you?

Now my breeding and working days are over I take pride that I'm one of the totally fucking useless drain on society class. To conform amongst my peers in this segment of the population requires a special non-conformist mind set.
For instance buying heavily into drug companies by way of NHS for as many ailments as possible and having them all delivered free by Pharmacy2u to avoid the unnecessary mind numbing stupidity of queueing in Boots.
Always making sure I'm in the right company when I break the news of the birth of a new haemorrhoid.Particularly the vicar and his sanctimonious wife.
Having mother stuffed so I can still get a free TV licence. Insulting as many sad bastards on Twitter and Facebook as I can.
Devising ever more ways of annoying the missus such as farting in bed and pulling the covers over her head.
There are many other nasty little non-conformist traits that make me a conformist in this company. Shall I continue or have you seen enough?
My unconforming is coming along quite nicely thank you now that I've left that lovely institution known as school... yet I'd like to think I was about the sweetest subversive teacher a person could ever meet.
