When I began writing

When I began writing they suggested "start in your own backyard" - thinking about it now, it might have been David Niven's character in Don't Eat The Daisies when he's trying to give honest feedback to a cab driver or somebody at the kids school. This working man had written about the Egyptians or something so a well meaning Niven tried to say "be yourself, write your story" but instead of sounded like he was saying "write about a poor working class fella like yourself cos it's all you know so it's all you're good for you poor bastard," sort of vibe so it all struck out in a "well my shit smells the same as yours pal, so don't inflict your snobby fuckery on me you stuck up yourself better than the workin man kind of elitist / saw you momma on dat corner uptown" attitude.
