Sometimes, I need to cover the lecture, but students, they want to talk about the assignment.
Of course, the lecture material needs to be covered first.
The problem, is also that you get punishment in large teaching teams for inconsistency, PLUS, inconsistency is the main thing external examiners are interested in detecting, calling out, and stopping, AND it's pretty much the main thing academic appeals are made of.
